
Km/Km/Al-Hilal Vidyalaya, operating under Sainthamaruthu Division of Kalmunai Educational District of Ampara District in Eastern Province in Sri Lanka, was started on 1913.03.01 at Sainthamaruthu during the British rule. This school has a long history and is the first school started in Sainthamaruthu.
Initially started with 20 students and one principal, this school only had a 'T' shaped school building. After 1926 classes were held up to Tamil Muslim students from neighboring towns were also educated. Due to lack of space, fire pits were erected in front of the building. The students of this school were sent to a government school for girls in Sainthamaruthu. After this, the name of the school was changed to 'Government Men's School'.
Later, according to the change in the curriculum, the name of the school was changed to (Rural Scheme School). During this time, wood working, environmental education, sanitation, land surveying, gardening, and pottery Education were taught. Teachers were appointed for this. At the end of the eighth standard, a public examination was held under the name of JSC.
The lands on the eastern and southern sides were acquired by the government for the school. During this period, this school was popular in the area. It is noteworthy that the 25th anniversary of the coronation of King George V was celebrated in this auditorium with much fanfare.
Due to educational reform process subjects were reduced and emphasis was given to other subjects. Two students passed the Class 5 Scholarship Examination held in 1943 under the Free Education Scheme. During the 1950s, this school was an all-boys school and more than 1000 students were educated. From 1951 the classes were held under the name of 'Government Muslim Boy's School'. The number of students also increased. Two school buildings of 110' x 20' and 60' x 20' were constructed in 1952. Students studying above fifth standard in schools in Sainthamaruthu were admitted to another school. As a result, the school became a primary school up to class five.
Since 1973, teaching and administration have been done well. In 1980, the old teachers' hostel was demolished and a new principal's office was built. A new assembly hall was built in 1989. From 1992, education was introduced up to class VII. Piped water, science lab, resource center, latrines were constructed. Pupils have excelled in the annual 5th class scholarship examination. The teachers union was newly formed. Parental assistance received. Interested in extra curricular activities. From the year 2000, under the leadership of a new principal, the building constructed in 1952 was demolished and a three-storey building was constructed. The building erected when the school was started in 1913 was demolished and a three-storied building was completed in 2005 and completed in 2006 by GOAL Company. The Science Laboratory is 50' x 25' and was completed in 2007 by the Provincial Education Ministry. The building dedicated as a reading room was renovated in 2007 as a complete reading room measuring 40' x 25'. In 2007, A Computer Resource Center was set up by the company.
At present, classes up to tenth standard are held in this school. About 2000 students are studying. The number of classes is 50 and the number of teachers is 76. Students are performing well in the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination every year.
The educational quality of this school is high due to the leadership of principals who have perseverance and management skills. The incumbents, officials and retirees in many fields have formed an old students' association which they learned. Desire of the absence of a play ground is the biggest drawback of this school.
